WIG'S! WIG'S! AND MORE WIG'S!!!
Wig Specialist Jane McIntyre

Jane McIntyre is a native of the Mississippi Gulf Coast and has now returned from Atlanta where she has lived for the past 9 years.

While living in Atlanta and working as a hairstylist she discovered a demand specializing in cranial prosthetics (wigs) for women with medically induced hair loss. Upon taking a position as a hairstylist to cut human and synthetic wigs, with the largest hospital in Atlanta that provides a facility to meet this need, she recognized very quickly this would be her calling. “I knew in my first consultation with a client that this scope of work had
tremendous meaning and was very rewarding for me personally knowing that I can assist a women to feel and look beautiful while she is undergoing the rigors of chemotherapy.”

I was also given the opportunity to do consultations with patients in their hospital rooms.
So I would go to where the patients needed me. If they were housebound, I would travel to care for them in the privacy of their bedroom. It was a wonderful experience.

So it was a natural progression that I obtained more training and education to become
A certified wig consultant and fitter, which I have been specializing in the last 4 years. It is very important to provide the client with first of all the compassion in knowing what she is going through. Then she needs to be guided in understanding and knowledge regarding the impact of her hair loss, the services she will be receiving, proper selection of a wig, and knowing she has a support throughout her time in wearing her wig. I also established a free wig program called Wigs Go Round that provided gently used donated wigs to women who could not otherwise afford one. These women have a special place in my heart.

One young lady was 15 with a brain tumor, and she received a human hair wig that exactly matched her own, the other young mother of 2 was in a tragic accident at a lumber mill in North Georgia, and had her scalp torn off. The scar tissue was substantial. Yet in fitting her with a beautiful brown synthetic, her demeanor began to change, she was smiling in the mirror. It was a precious moment that I will never forget.

In addition to working a wig consultant, I became a Look Good…Feel Better facilitator for the American Cancer Society, at the local hospital in Forsyth County. And completed training to become a certified mastectomy fitter. I will continue to be a volunteer with the Look Good…. Feel Better Program here in Gulfport, MS at the Memorial Hospital along with JoAn Niceley.

When I knew I would be returning to the coast, my first appointment was to meet JoAn
Niceley, the founder of Pink Heart Funds Foundation. Now I am excited to have the opportunity to volunteer to help women and children loosing their hair from cancer to receive the best of care.
