Coast Electric Employees Donate to Local Charity
Mar 5, 2007 --
Employees of Coast Electric Power Association banded together this February in a grassroots effort to help a local charity and a little girl in need. The charity is Long Beach resident and Coast Electric member JoAn Niceley's creation - the Pink Heart Fund. The Pink Heart Fund donates wigs to cancer patients in need and Niceley uses her skills as a hair stylist to custom fit the wigs. Niceley is a cancer survivor herself and is an inspiration to her clients.
Earlier this year, Niceley learned about 18-month-old cancer patient Tori Hopkins, whose family is struggling after months of treatments for Tori. Niceley decided that all donations made to the Pink Heart Fund in the month of February would go to help Tori and her family. When Coast Electric employees learned about Niceley's efforts, they were moved to action and decided to start a fund raiser for the Pink Heart Fund and for Tori.
Since Valentine's Day was approaching, a group of employees decided to sell flowers to fellow Coast Electric staff with the proceeds of the sales benefiting the Pink Heart Fund. A total of $500 was raised during the sale but employees' generosity didn't stop there. Additional funds were raised by selling Niceley's cookbook, Appetite for Living, and by selling raffle tickets as part of a coast-wide effort for baby Tori. At the end of the month, more than $1,500 was raised by Coast Electric employees to benefit the Pink Heart Fund and Tori.
"I am proud of our employees and the generosity they have shown in supporting a child in need," said Coast Electric President and CEO Robert Occhi. "One of our operating principles is concern for the communities we serve and I believe our employees have been an excellent example of living this principle."
