Walk in Pass honors Roberts

PASS CHRISTIAN --
A Pink Ribbon Walk honoring Good Morning America's Robin Roberts and her fight against Breast Cancer brought together more than 100 sneaker-wearing supporters who lined the scenic paths of Pass Christian in the early morning hours Saturday.
The Keystone Torch Club members of the Boys and Girls Clubs of the Gulf Coast - Pass Christian Unit were hosts of the one-mile walk. At the citywide picnic, "A Salute to 39571" that afternoon at War Memorial Park, they gave Roberts the proceeds for the Pink Heart Funds and also gave her a book of inspiration.
Roberts enthusiasts from all walks of life participated in the fundraiser that included a $1 donation for an Inspiration book containing pictures, poems, and words of encouragement created for Roberts.
Roberts is scheduled as the guest speaker for The Pink Heart Funds Fundraiser Luncheon on Wednesday at the Beau Rivage in Biloxi.
The Pink Heart Funds is a nonprofit organization that provides wigs and prostheses to women and children who have financial hardship and are suffering from breast cancer.
"I think Robin Roberts is our champion and I wanted to come to this walk today to be a champion for her," said Pink Ribbon Walk participant Sue Maters.
The Keystone Torch Club has been raising money for the Pink Heart Funds all week with activities including a cake sale, a school-wide Hat Day, a Robin Roberts Inspiration Book Donation Day, and the Pink Ribbon Walk.
"Robin Roberts was excited to hear that we were holding this Pink Ribbon Walk and that we have been raising money and awareness for the Pink Heart Funds," said walk organizer Jackie McGee.
Roberts announced on ABC's morning television show July 31 that she had been diagnosed with breast cancer. She underwent surgery on August 3.
"I did not mind climbing out of bed this early to support this effort and to pay tribute to Roberts who is an inspiration to all of us here," said resident of Pass Christian Georgia Leyser.
